I'm surprised by the positive reviews of this book. As a teacher, I've studied a lot about backward designing courses and materials to the exam. I spent hours studying the material in each section of this book. When I reached the practice exams, more than half of the questions (especially in practice test 2: Assessment and Instruction) asked for specific information regarding Title 5, Ed Code, etc., that was never mentioned in the book. The book had very general information (i.e. a header of "Family," and information that reads "The family is the basic unit of society. The size and configuration of the family varies...").I also expected an intentional organization of the information. Instead, the entire book consisted of a bold header and a paragraph, then another bold header and paragraph. Sometimes the bold headers were confusing, as they would reference just one part of the following paragraph.
I am taking the test tomorrow, so hopefully will pass, but if I do I don't feel that it will be because of the information in this book.

CTEL Exam Secrets Study Guide CTEL Test Review for the California Teacher of English Learners Examination eBook CTEL Exam Secrets Test Prep Team Reviews
Good for basic knowledge and information if you do not work with ELLs or are not familiar with literature concepts. The test are the most useful. I did not find the video.
I purchased the CTEL Exam Secrets Study Guide to help me for the test in May of this year (2016). I really love the fact that the prep book takes a ton of content and facilitates its digestion by having small chunks of reading on the diverse topics. As an educator, I always emphasize to my kids that this is the best way in which we learn. There is a reason phone, social security, and credit card numbers are divided into small chunks rather than a massive number. It's easier to remember (112) 345-6789 instead of someone telling you their number is 1,123,456,789. Btw, don't ever call someone if they give you their number in the latter manner. Technically speaking, they're the same number but chunking really makes it easier to remember. The same can be said about the information needed to pass the CTEL. This prep book does a great job of chunking. As a result, it allows the reader to further chunk that information into paraphrased flashcards, at least that's what I'm doing to help me learn the terms a little better. Further, if you don't like making your own cards, you can alternatively access the free Quizlet cards online and use them in conjunction with this great prep book. Best of luck test-takers!!!!!
Worked as advertised, helped me pass the CTEL test the first try.
This book is a valuable review, though overwhelming if it's your only source. I recommend pairing it with CTEL Exam Practice Questions CTEL Practice Tests & Review for the California Teacher of English Learners Examination from the same publisher, plus A Course for Teaching English Learners (2nd Edition)
The study guide is well-organized, with descriptions of specific topics outlined throughout almost 2/3 of the book. The 3 practice tests, 3 essays and explanations of the answers are really helpful in dissecting strategies and examples, giving a genuine view of how the test will look. There was a hidden treasure on the last page…downloadable versions of the practice test questions and explanations! The downloadable tests were close to the amount of problems that I will face on the test, giving me a realistic run-through of how the actual test will feel! I have not yet taken the test, but I feel more prepared after going through this book.
This book is very poorly organized with a hodge-podge of information scattered throughout and no logical flow. Many things are repeated multiple times, and many CTEL objectives are left out. Definitely does not contain enough information for the CTEL II. In addition, several ideas in this book are outdated and not widely regarded as accurate any longer (ie the idea that each student has a specific learning style). I would not recommend you spend your money on this book. I would recommend you just buy the CLAD textbook BY PEARSON. (They administer the test anyway).
I took the CTEL and passed all 3 without this book. I paid for this book towards the end and started reading it and realized rather quickly that I wasted my money on VERY general information that you can find online. Just google CTEL, use the materials on their website, read textbooks, and get the practice question books. Don’t waste your money with this
